As part of City Wildlife’s Lights Out DC campaign, volunteers walk a prescribed route in Washington, during the early morning hours, looking for birds that have flown into buildings. Ideally, volunteers commit to covering the 2-hour route at least once a week during April and May (peak spring bird migration time).
Data collected from picking up dead and injured birds helps build the case for turning off unnecessary lights at night to prevent bird collisions with buildings. Injured birds are transported to a wildlife rehabilitation facility and dead birds are collected.
For more information on how to become a volunteer for this important project, send an email to info@citywildlife.org.
Migratory bird populations are decreasing and at risk. Collisions with buildings kill more birds than any other single factor, and nocturnal migrants (most neo-tropical songbirds fly at night) are attracted to artificial lights. In an effort to do as much as we can to save these birds, Lights Out DC is asking that taller buildings turn off unnecessary lights during peak migration seasons and is collecting data to build their case. The Lights Out DC program is patterned after similar successful programs already established in Chicago, Toronto, Boston, Minneapolis, and other cities.
